Katie's Art Project

There once lived a girl named Katie Andryca. She was a wild, crazy, loving, artistic, and passionate young woman who loved rain because of the worms and rainbows. She loved caterpillars because they are fuzzy and make beautiful butterflies, and she loved art.

In December of 1999 Katie was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She was an immediate in-patient spending all the major holidays in that little seven-room ward. The artist that she was, she decorated that room within an inch of its stark white, sterility driven life. It was Katie's dream to be a creator of art.

About two years later, in late 2001, after a strong fight and a lot of art projects, Katie passed away but not before inspiring Katie’s Art Project to be established. Its mission is to bring the creation of art to kids with cancer. Also to create long-term relationships between kids and the artists and allow the creation of art and the forming of a legacy to be a part of every kid and artists life no matter the prognosis.

The Center for Headaches and Facial Pain is proud to sponsor the Katie Andryca Memorial Art Award annually in Katie’s honor and the honor of every child who heroically continues to create art. This award is given at graduation at Cedar Drive Middle School in Colts Neck, NJ to the two students chosen for their outstanding artistic achievements.
